What condition is the cause of this hair loss?

  1. This is a patient with alopecia areata (AA). AA is an inflammatory alopecia, with a characteristic “swarm of bees” appearance on biopsy. The swarm of bees appearance is formed by the lymphocytes around the hair follicles. The areas of hair loss are often round, as seen in this patient. Treatment for alopecia includes immune-modulating agents.
