This diabetic patient has a nonhealing ulcer on her foot. This has occurred as a result of decreased sensation from peripheral neuropathy and poor circulation from vascular damage often seen in diabetics. When these patients sustain injuries to their feet, they are less able to feel pain and their wound healing is compromised due to the neurological and vascular changes associated with diabetes.
