What is the name for the dermatologic finding (skin lesions) seen here? What condition is it often associated with?

  1. These are circumscribed, atrophic, slightly depressed lesions called necrobiosis lipoidica. These lesions often occur on the shins but can be found in other areas of the body including the forearms, hands, and trunk. They arise in crops and gradually resolve, but new lesions appear and occasionally may ulcerate.

This condition is highly associated with microangiopathy in the dermal layer. When found in diabetic patients, the condition is also called necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum. The lesions themselves may be painless until they begin to ulcerate. However, as a result of the underlying microangiopathy, the lesions can prone to infection and slow to heal.
