This finger infection is rare and limited to children and dental/medical professionals who don’t wear gloves.  What is the diagnosis?

  1. The diagnosis is herpetic whitlow, which describes distal digital herpes simplex virus (HSV). Children and dental/medical professionals are the main groups affected as a result of oral-to-digital transmission of HSV. The lesions appear in crops as tender, erythematous vesicles. They can extend into the nail bed as well. Oral acyclovir is used for treatment and suppression, when necessary. Herpetic whitlow is one of the many reasons why health care professional should wear gloves!
